History of Art and Architecture

You’ll develop the historical insight and critical thinking skills needed to analyze and interpret a wide array of artistic movements, architectural styles, and cultural contexts. Through examining the evolution of art and architecture, you’ll gain the tools to understand their influence on societies, politics, and personal identity, and how they continue to shape the world around us.

Overview

The study of Art and Architecture explores how visual expression and built environments reflect and influence cultural, social, and historical developments. At Lisburn University, we investigate the many ways art and architecture have shaped, and continue to shape, human experiences across time and place.

In one of your classes, your professor might present an iconic architectural design or a famous piece of artwork. You and your classmates will analyze and critique it from various perspectives, such as its cultural context, artistic techniques, aesthetic value, and historical significance. You’ll also consider how the work reflects societal values and ideologies of its time, and how these ideas continue to resonate today. Then, you’ll have the opportunity to produce your own creative or critical work in response, applying the knowledge you’ve gained to real-world challenges.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates work and intern in a wide variety of roles across the art and architecture sectors — including museum and gallery curation, art restoration, architectural design, urban planning, historic preservation, exhibition design, and arts administration. Many have pursued careers in education, publishing, or in creative agencies. Others have gone on to further studies in art history, architecture, urban design, cultural heritage management, and other related fields. Additionally, some of our graduates have started their own art galleries, design firms, or consultancies, while others have taken on roles within nonprofits, governmental organizations, and cultural institutions.
